I am delighted to announce that Cove Care’s own design of our inpatient child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) unit has been successfully patented with the international bureau. This award demonstrates the innovation, uniqueness and creativity of the design, and would also indicate that we are absolutely on to something quite special, in terms of providing a clinical environment that will really work for children and young people.
Our ground-breaking design enables a 12-bedded ward space to function as smaller units in multiples of 3. This functionality enables the clinical team to effectively tailor the environment to meet the needs of the inpatient group at any one time: operating as a larger, 12-bed unit when patients have lower acuity and low associated risks; or as 6- or 3-bed units in more psychiatric emergency situations. This transformative use of an inpatient ward is completely in sync with the abilities to ‘flex’ and operate ‘responsively’ to the needs of patients, values that are rightly promoted in current NHSE and CQC guidance. This flexible arrangement also enables patients to be ‘matched’ together, reducing the negative impact often found in inpatient settings.
This patent award is dedicated to the memory and vision of Beverly Cyrus, my wife and co-founding director at Cove who sadly passed away last year, and showcases the creativity and technical expertise of Derrick Cyrus, Bev’s brother and our worthy collaborator on this project. Derrick’s ability to accurately draw mine and Bev’s – sometimes not always clear! – verbal and scribbled descriptions of the unit, was amazing. Bev would be delighted to see her innovation recognised in this way. It is my job now to see our design become a living, functioning building, delivering excellence and transformation in inpatient CAMHS. We anticipate commencement of the build at some point in 2025.
