A message from our founder, Lee Smith:
It’s fantastic that we have a World Mental Health Day. This annual event has been running from 1992 and is incredible in raising awareness and keeping mental health ‘top of mind’ for a global audience. Understanding, sharing, and talking about mental health is brilliant.Â
However, on this years WMHD, I wanted to raise that while this general awareness is so important, more can be done for those 100s of thousands of people in severe mental health crisis right now. WMHD might get a 20 minute segment on Good Morning Britain, or air some ads that generate much needed fund raising, but unless this translates to real-time, immediate and accessible support for those in severe mental distress, then what is it for, really?
When I was a mental health nursing student in the early 1990’s, I remember reading an opinion article with the title (along the lines of): ‘All this talk of mental health risks ignoring mental illness’. I can’t find that article but it resonated then as it does now. Clinicians, researchers and government need to do more to look after those with serious mental health difficulties, beyond lip service. Certainly at this years WMHD, we at Cove Care will be doing our bit as we support our young people, not just today, but every day.
